Final Isaac Sickness Update (We HOPE)

Isaac had his last surgery this week. He's feeling a little funny here but I assure you he is back to his old self and feeling healthy again. We saw Dr. Osguthorpe (the infection physician) yesterday and got a surprise. He pulled the pic line and put Isaac just on oral antibiotics because he thought he was doing so well. Isaac got to take his first real bath in 3 weeks tonight and was able to remove all the bandages and tape and be a free boy. He is so happy tonight. I am glad the stress of the IV and all the medications is gone. He will return to Dr. Riddle (ENT) Monday to have a final CT Scan and to check his hearing. We are expecting for those results to be normal.

I just checked my inbox at work and got this email from my bestie who had the boys over to play today. This is how I UNDENIABLY know she's my bestie (among so many other things). It seems that every time Abby goes to play, she is sure to save a dirty diaper for Becky....Anyone that can wipe your kid's bum and still have the humor to laugh about it desreves a gold star in my book!


Mindy- I just wanted to write this down becaues it was too funny. Ethan disapeared for a little while and then we hear him say.

Ethan "Becky, I need you to wipe my bum"
Isaac "don't worry, I'll do it. . . but i've never done it before"
Becky "It's ok, I can do it, I have boys"
Isaac "thanks Becky, I really don't want to."

A little while passes and here comes Isaac

Isaac "don't worry Becky, you don't have to do for me what you did for Ethan, I can do it myself"
Becky "Do what?"
Isaac "You know, wipe and stuff"

How do you glue a box to the wall?

Just ask Ethan, he knows....I went home for lunch today and there he was, trying to use a glue stick to glue a box as big as he is to the wall. If only it were that simple....I wished I had my camera it was quite a sight!

Hairy & the Hills

This is the first time in the 15+ years that I have known Jusitn, that he has ever had facial hair...this pic was taken a week ago, so there's even more now. He keeps wanting to shave it but I say no....it's way too sexy! I love my mountain man!

Isaac Update

Isaac has been home for nearly a week now. He has been getting regular nursing visits from his home health nurse. Justin and I have been giving the injections regularly and that is going well. Isaac refused his dressing change yesterday and insisted that I do it. Well, it is a sterile procedure so I did the best I could but it made me very nervous. I feel kind of like a nurse myself. It makes us happy to be able to take care of him. He hasn't had a temperature in several days, his energy and spirits are increasing and he's just overall doing better. His labs are still a little wacky (mainly is high platelet count) so we are still having routine blood draws done to monitor what's going on. He has just a few more weeks (hopefully) of injections through the pic. Things are starting to settle down at our house. We can't say enough thanks to all of you who have prepared meals, watched our other children, sent treats & lots of prayers our way. We love all of you!

For those of you who are wondering, this is what the pic line looks like under all the bandages. It is held in by a stitch on each side. It enters at his forearm, is threaded through a major vein and goes all the way to his chest just by his heart.

Magic Show

After all the hospital posts lately, I thought we would post something more fun. We had a magic show at our house just for fun a couple of weeks ago. The magician was one of my friends from Courtyard. The kids really loved it, and I apologize for any parents that had children that were cut in two sent home in pieces LOL!

Curious Isaac Goes to the Hospital

When it was time to go home, my awesome nurse Kareleigh brought my to our car in this wagon. There wasn't much room for me though, I had too many new toys from everyone to take home!

My final X-Ray which I thought was way cool. This was taken to make sure the pic line had gone where it was suppose to.

I don't remember this at all, but asked my mom and dad to take pictures so I could see what they did to me.

Here I am heavily medicated but conscious as they put a pic line in my arm all the way to my heart.

My mom took this of me the third night I was there. She couldn't sleep, she kept looking at me and thinking about the night I was born...I had the same peaceful look then. My mom thinks I am just as sweet now as I was then. I know my parents are so glad I feel better.

Such Sweetness

My sweet BFF arranged these beautiful tulips for me the second day we were in the hospital with Isaac. I mean, how sweet is she? It was her birthday and I abandoned her. She made sure we had home cooked meals every night, strong moral support, and that my kids were well cared for. I have rarely ever known anyone with such sweetness in my life. I am so blessed to call her my BFF. Love, M

He's Home

Don't have much time to write, but wanted to let everyone know that after an awfully difficult day Isaac was able to come home this evening. He had a pic line put in about 11:30 today. It was one of the most horrible things that Justin and I will ever have to endure I am sure. Isaac was pretty much in a happily medicated state. It is amazing to me that they can thread something so tiny through your vein in your forearm all the way to your heart! The home health nurse will be here at 8:00 tonight to teach us how to do the IV medications for the next 3-4 weeks. I can't stop thinking about how close we came to losing this sweet boy. For now we are so thankful to be home and incredibly grateful he's okay. I'll post some of the courageous pictures we got later this weekend. This is one tough kid.....

Update

Just wanted to give everyone an update on Isaac's status. He had his CT can this morning. He was taken in to the OR at about 12:30 to have tubes put in his right ear to help heal and drain the infection. The bad news is that the infection is far worse than what they originally thought. It may even be MRSA (a rare kind of staff). They are culturing the infection in the lab and will know more about what it is specifically and how to treat it then. They have brought in Dr. Osguthorpe, a skilled infectious dr. but he is out of town until tomorrow. Once he sees Isaac and the test results, he will be able to determine the next step. It is possible he will be able to come home after a few more days with either a pic line or oral antibiotics. He has been such a trooper...When I have more time, I will post some pictures of our brave boy and write about some of his sweet & funny comments while being contained. Thank you for all the cards, visits, trinkets to keep him busy and meals that all of you have contributed! Keep on praying he'll be better sooNn!

Hosptial

After a series of very unfortunate events, our sweet Isaac is in the hospital. He has a very rare infection called mastoiditis caused by complications of the ear infection and strep. We are especially grateful it was caught when it was. He was just a few hours away from possibly going septic or getting meningitis. This condition is extremely dangerous because the mastoid bone is next to the brain. His temperature continues to be high which is a constant concern. He is comfortable now and on continual IV therapy for the next day or two at least. He will have a CT Scan tomorrow morning to check the condition of the infection and a decision about immediate surgery will be made by Dr. Riddle (the ENT specialist) at that time. It may require that he have tubes and possible a bone scrape to get the infection out if he is not responding to the IV. We are eternally grateful to the intuitions we felt to get this looked at, the wonderful medical staff caring for him and all of our friends and family. We love all of you so very much and greatly appreciate your continual prayers and well wishes. We'll keep you posted on his progress.

We have had many dental issues in our household lately, thus causing a serious conversation between Isaac and Ethan at the table during lunch yesterday....
Isaac replies to Ethan who is asking about the tooth fairy, "Ethan, the tooth fairy comes down from heaven with a guardian angel. The tooth fairy leaves the money and the angel takes all the teeth back to heaven and give them to all the old people up there who don't have any."
I think my work might be having an impact on my children, what do you think?

The Booger Collection

Yeah, that's right....I discovered a booger collection in our house last week. I was de-junking the boys room and discovered that Ethan had been wiping them on his wall by his bed! I know, you are all going, ewwww gross and wondering what kind of hygiene requirements we have in our family. I proceeded to scold him and tell him the I would clean it up this time and that he better NEVER do that again! Well, before bed last night, I went in to tuck them in and actually caught him counting the NEW BOOGERS! He's in big trouble in our house. I told him that I am going to invite his big crush Naomi over and share this little secret with her. I NEED HELP....BOYS ARE GROSS!

A Moment.....

I have to share a moment in the Hill household tonight...today was a typical Monday. I rushed to get out the door this morning. I rushed to get home for lunch today to see the kids and Jus. As I arrived home the kids announced their true desire to go outside and play (today was the first somewhat warm day we have had in months). So, I spent my entire lunch break picking up the past 4 months of dog poo so they could play in a "poop free" environment. I rushed back to the office. And I especially rushed home today. The sun was shining for the first time in weeks. We went on a great walk. I came home and made soup for my sick sweetheart who was in bed. We did a quick family home evening lesson and a lesson in allowance (the boys are both studying money at school.) Now comes the funny part...I had done the dishes and rushed everyone away to get their PJs on (I promised them if they did as I asked, they could each earn a quarter). Then I snuck to the pantry to make myself a smore...Thanks Aunt Nicki for leaving your treats at our house! As I am enjoying my treat I hear each of the boys (in separate bathrooms but both sitting on the pot) reciting their ABC's back and forth to one another. Then in sync, they both announce, "Mom, I need you to come wipe my bum.." Man, I LOVE this Job! :)

The Dance Dresses

I have been meaning to post this for quite awhile. This picture was taken in 1991 at my first school dance as a freshman. The other girl in the picture is someone that would become a life long friend and sister in law. The funniest thing about this picture is that she talked me into wearing her dress (you know, the one that is falling off my shoulders) so she could wear mine. I am proud to say that both of these dresses are still in my posession and someday our little girls will giggle as the try them on and think of their mommas. I remember being in aerobics class in high school together and talking about how fun it would be if we were sisters. I am so grateful that dream became a reality to me. Amy gave us the best dog ever. She was there and shared the birth of our first child. She is a beautiful person inside and out. I feel a certain special energy when she and her twin are around. Love you girl!
